Google is emitting version five of its Android operating system, codenamed Lollipop, to selected devices – and has made firmware images available for the technically savvy to download and install.

So far it looks as though the update will be pushed out over the air to Nexus 4, 5 and 7 owners, while firmware downloads are now up on Google.com. However, a change log on the Motorola website indicates the second-generation Moto G handsets will also get the upgrade, and if so then the Moto X should be getting it, too.

You'd expect Nexus devices to be high on the list for the update – although the office Nexus 5 has yet to see the new code – and mobes from Motorola, which was until recently owned by Google, should also get the new OS quickly.

LG has also put out a statement saying its devices are also in line for Lollipop. The company's G3 handsets should also be updated shortly.

"LG is absolutely committed to giving our customers the best mobile experiences available and bringing Android Lollipop to G3 owners as soon as possible is a top priority," said Jong-seok Park, president of LG.

"The new features and improvements in Android 5.0 will bring a whole new user experience to the G3 and make it even better than it already is."

While this new major Android build has a number of stylistic changes in the user interface, the biggest advantage to upgrading is going to be the longer battery life. The new OS is far better power manager than its predecessors, and as there isn’t a smartphone user out there who doesn't get frustrated at having to recharge every day this feature will likely be warmly received. ®
