According to a report in The Information , Samsung is planning on dipping its toes in the world of original short-form video content. Think Netflix, but lower-budget and probably without Kevin Spacey.
The report says that the service will be code-named 'Volt', and cost subscribers a couple bucks per month, in return for access to short-form content. Although Samsung's apparently hoping to attract Hollywood big-names, the budget is in the 'tens of millions' rather than Netflix's hundreds of millions.
Samsung doesn't have much pedigree as a media company — it had to shutter its Media Hub operation because of conflicts with Google's Play Store. Of course, what Samsung does have is a good history of slightly crazy R&D projects, so there's a good possibility that Volt might never see the light of day. [The Information via CNET ]
