Extreme adds switches and partners

Extreme Networks has launched a quartet of switches and a management appliance, in what it says is an expansion of its software defined network (SDN) strategy.

Back in June, the company launched its OpenStack SDN platform. That launch wrapped a bunch of API toolkits together with NetSight management and Purview optimisation products.

Now, Extreme has expanded the offering with a Purview Sensor appliance, the Summit X670-G2 top-of-rack switches, and an expanded partner program.

Four variants of the switches have been announced, from a 16x10 Gbps / 4x40 Gbps configuration up to 72 ports of 10 Gbps Ethernet. As well as the top-of-rack application, the outfit is pitching the Summit switches as suitable for core networking in smaller sites, aggregation switching, or as low-latency HPC interconnect.

The company also says it's added http://sanbolic.com/ Sanbolic (software defined storage), A-10 Networks (application delivery, threat protection and carrier-grade switching) and NetOptics (network management) as SDN partners.

The Purview appliance is the next step for Extreme in pushing out the software capabilities it ingested in last year's US$180 million acquisition of Enterasys.

At the time, Extreme said that Enterasys OS features would start appearing in its products within two years, so that part appears to be running ahead of schedule. It also ended the long run of one of the Ethernet market's driving forces of the 1990s, Cabletron. ®
