VMware's tried for years, without much success, to sell productivity apps. Now it's having another go by getting out the twine to bind three of AirWatch's offerings into a “collaboration bundle”.
The bundle includes the AirWatch Content Locker, essentially a private Dropbox clone that aggregates content and adds secured access tools. There's also the video distribution platform AirWatch Video and the Yammer-jammer Socialcast.
There's no indication that there's new integration between the three products, or that this “bundle” is more than marketecture. But when you've tried and failed to sell productivity apps repeatedly – think the acquisition and subsequent dumping of Zimbra and Mozy – perhaps a bundle of existing tools around a theme of enterprise collaboration isn't the worst way to try again.
The bundle can be delivered from vCloud Air, should you wish it. That cloud now has an extra lobe, as VMware today announced its Melbourne, Australia, bit barn is alive and blinking. The service is functionally identical to the extant nodes in the USA, UK, Germany and Japan. VMware reckons Australia's political and tectonic stability makes it a nice place to pop a workload, especially for multinationals with local operations. ®
