Celebrated Pakistani female online activist Sabeen Mahmud dies in shooting

Unidentified gunmen have killed Pakistani women's activist Sabeen Mahmud in a targeted shooting that also left her mother in intensive care.

News of the murder emerged over the weekend, with reports from Karachi that she died on the way to hospital after being shot four times.

Pakistan's The Express Tribune reports the case is being treated as a terrorist attack.

Mahmud was returning home from a meeting at the cafe and gathering space she had co-founded, called The 2nd Floor, or T2F, where she had hosted a forum discussing citizens missing in the ongoing Balochistan conflict.

Motorcyclists opened fire from both sides of her car, The Express Tribune states.

An outspoken human rights and free speech activist, Mahmud organised Pakistan's first hackathon in April 2013.

The Taliban has distanced itself from the killing, with The Indian Express reporting it has pointed the finger at the Pakistani government.

According to Yahoo! in Pakistan, the country's intelligence agency, ISI, made a “rare statement” stating that the agency will help police investigators investigating the crime.

Acting President Raza Rabbani called the killing inhuman, and has ordered Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah “to arrest the perpetrators within three days”. ®
