Facebook to fling open Messenger to third party apps – report

Facebook is reportedly set to announce plans to allow third-party apps to access the company's stand-alone Messenger service.

The free content ad network, which released its Messenger app in 2011, is apparently poised to unveil deals with 20 different outfits.

Mashable reported that Facebook will announce the tie-ins during its F8 Developer conference in San Francisco this week.

The 20 third party apps will work on top of Messenger, a person familiar with the matter was quoted as saying.

Last week, the Mark Zuckerberg-run company introduced its peer-to-peer money transfer service, which will initially be rolled out to US users over the next few months. ®
