Google bans smut on Blogger, unless it's educational

Google has let it be known that as of March 23rd, access to smut blogs hosted on Blogger will be restricted.

As of that date “... you won't be able to publicly share images and video that are sexually explicit or show graphic nudity”, Google says.

All data will be retained, but come March 23rd any Blogger blogs hosting racy video or pics will be made private. Private blogs “... can only be seen by the owner or admins of the blog and the people who the owner has shared the blog with.”

Google says those with the newly-controlled content on their blogs can either choose to go Private, clean up their act or take their bats and balls and go home. Or somewhere happy to host those implements.

Nudity will still be permitted on public blogs “if the content offers a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts.”

Google's not saying why it's made this decision, or why it's given Blogger members just a month in which to act.

The announcement seems to have been made in the early hours of the European morning. By the time US Blogger users wake up, we expect a firestorm of anger to follow and will track developments accordingly. ®
