Ants Are So Passé, You Need a Termite Farm On Your Desk

Is there any better way to relax than being reminded of your species' dominance on this planet while watching a bunch of bugs trapped in a clear plastic enclosure? Not likely. But ant farms are so yesterday, what you need is your own personal termite farm, and that's exactly what the Termitat delivers—complete with a slice of Douglas Fir to keep them fed for up to two years.

There are some obvious questions and concerns that come to mind when planning to keep an active colony of termites in your home. Like what if they escape, or what if they escape, and what if they escape? But their creator, Chris Poehlmann, promises the quarter-inch thick clear acrylic plastic used for the Termitat is escape-proof. And even if they get out, he specifically chose Dampwood Termites which prefer wet logs and wood found in a forest, not the dry timber in your home.

Maintenance is as easy as injecting a bit of water twice a month using a syringe, because the termite's feast on the wood they call home. And when they've consumed everything in the Termitat, you can send it back for a fresh log and a fresh family of termites.

Chris has turned to Kickstarter to help fund production of his miniature self-contained termite utopias, and a pledge of $125 will get you a bare bones kit. The thought of purposely bringing termites into their home might still be hard for some people to come to terms with, but Chris spent the last 25 years of his life designing and building exhibits for zoos, museums, and aquariums, so he knows a thing or two about keeping lesser species safely held hostage.
